Ethics and integrity for AI in research

Webinar

10 September 2024, 14:00 – 15:30 CET

Co-organised by CoARA WG ERIP, ALLEA and the European Commission’s Science Advice mechanism.

How can we promote the ethical use of AI? How might AI be employed to advance fundamental values and committments in science-related research and communication? And how can research practices in this new digital environment be assessed? These are the questions that this webinar will address.

This webinar draws on the recent advice adopted by the Group of Chief Scientific Advisors (GCSA) of the Scientific Advice Mechanism (SAM) at the request of Margrethe Vestager (Executive Vice-President for A Europe Fit for the Digital Age) and Iliana Ivanova (Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth). The resulting two reports focus on the question ‘How can the European Commission accelerate a responsible uptake of Artificial Intelligence in science (including providing access to high-quality Al while respecting and promoting European research values) in order to boost innovation and prosperity, strengthen the EU’s position in science, and ultimately contribute to solving Europe’s societal challenges?’.

The European Code of Conduct for Research Integrity (2023) provides a general framework for good research practices across all research types and disciplines. This revised edition also addresses new challenges for research integrity posed by AI.

This webinar will bring together leading European experts to examine the promises and challenges of AI for research and communication. Together we will look for new pathways forward to advance an ethical and innovative future for research and education in Europe.

Please register for this webinar if you wish to join in this critical conversation on the ethics and integrity of AI and research in the EU.
