“Vita brevis, ars longa.” (Hippocrates)
It is with deep sorrow that we mourn the sudden passing of our dear colleague, Dr. Jean-Emmanuel Faure, on 14 February 2025.
Jean-Emmanuel began his career as a researcher in cellular and molecular biology, working in Israel, the USA, and France before joining the European Commission and DG RTD in 2003. From that moment on, he dedicated his career to shaping research policies in the European Research Area, leaving a lasting mark on the field.
As the team leader of the Research Assessment Unit within DG RTD, Jean-Emmanuel played an instrumental role in laying the foundations for CoARA. His contributions can be seen everywhere in CoARA, from his thoughtful guidance in building the coalition in its nascent stages and his continued commitment to the coalition as it came to fruition. His impact will continue to be felt for years to come.
CoARA has lost a truly pivotal member of the coalition with the passing of Jean-Emmanuel. He will be dearly missed not only for his intelligence, insights, and professionalism but also for his kindness, humility, and generosity of spirit. He had a rare ability to listen, to encourage dialogue, and to bring people together with warmth and patience.
We send our most heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time. His memory will remain cherished within CoARA and beyond.
